The right to use these wells to raise crops which form the economic basis and livelihood of farmers, businessmen, and the entire state of Nebraska, is threatened.

This threat is a direct result of the long-standing actions of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and environmental extremists  culminating in the three state "Cooperative Agreement".

The DIRECT THREAT to farmers is from the COHYST (COoperative HYdrological STudy) Model effort - a seriously flawed effort which will allow the bureaucrats to control use of irrigation wells in the Platte Valley. COHYST is unnecessary & they are doing it wrong!

What is COHYST?
  • COHYST is a computer model (computer program) which will supposedly predict the effect of a well pumping on flows in the Platte River.
  • COHYST is to be complete by July, 2004.

What if COHYST is implemented?
  • Flow meters will be required on irrigation wells
  • The amount of water pumped will be restricted - by bureaucrats - NOT Farmers
  • Farmers may be FORCED to NOT use their own wells - under orders of bureaucrats
  • All because a computer thinks a well is harming the river flows!

What if the COHYST computer model is wrong?
  • If the model doesn't agree with actual field test results in some areas, IT WILL NOT BE CHANGED (COHYST Senior Modeler statement 6/26/03 at Central Platte NRD Presentation)

What if a farmer is harmed by a COHYST computer model being wrong?

Why is this Model necessary?
  • Bureaucrats, politicians, and environmental extremists would like to control your well!
  • Their COHYST model will probably be so flawed it will give them wrong answers AND
  • They are using FALSE CLAIMS that the Platte River and the Ogallala Aquifer are being depleted by groundwater use for farm irrigation to justify their "need" for control.
